How to Choose a Great Guinea Pig Veterinarian
In an ideal world one should select a veterinarian before even bringing a new guinea pig home. Even though one may go to great effort to find the healthiest guinea pig possible, emergencies can still appear out of nowhere and a time of stress is not ideal to be searching through the phone book.
Finding a Guinea Pig Specialist
Look online or in your local phone book for a specialist. Usually the specific term you are looking for is an “exotic” veterinarian. Many veterinarians treat other types of pets such as cats and dogs, and while technically qualified they may not know that guinea pigs cannot be given certain medication or how to do specialty treatments/emergency surgery. Ask around in your area if you are having trouble finding a reputable vet. Local rescue centers, clubs, and breeders ought to have someone to recommend.
Essential Qualities and Knowledge
The best veterinarian for you and your family will have a balance between knowledge and personal rapport. Is this someone who has experience working with guinea pigs? Have they completed any major surgeries? Would they prescribe penicillin in the case of infection? Answer should be ”no” as penicillin is toxic to guinea pigs. Would they prescribe Baytril for puppies? Answer again should be “no.” Ask for general recommendations for food and supplies and make sure the answers are to your liking.
While asking these questions see how comfortable you feel speaking with this person. Are they taking your questions seriously? Do they seem patient? These qualities are very important for cooperative relationships. On a practical level, make sure the office hours and location work for you. Check the after-hours emergency services and policies. If you don’t feel comfortable with any of the answers to the questions above, then keep looking until you find the best match possible.
