Does My Guinea Pig Need Probiotics?

If you are feeding your guinea pig a proper diet of vegetables in addition to food pellets, then he or she will be ingesting a significant amount of fiberous plant material. This fiberous plant material is broken down by gut bacteria. Probiotics may be useful to guinea pigs by adding additional food digesting bacteria to their diet. This is not an area which a lot of research has been done but what we do know is that times of stress and/or the consumption of certain medications like antibiotics will cause intestinal bacteria to die. This can lead to a variety of health problems.

What are my options?

Don’t use yogurt. Remember, your guinea pig is an herbivore and animal products are not part of the normal diet.

Go to the health food store and purchase a bottle of probiotics (in gel tab form so you can open the pill up.) If you guinea pig is sick and not eating, add some powder to water and feed via a needless syringe. If you wish to supplement your guinea pig on a regular basis, you can mix the powder in with their food.
